“I’m Not a Marketer—But I Know Marketing is Essential” (Here’s What to Do About It)

But here's the reality: no matter how good you are at your craft, if people don’t know you exist, you won’t have a business for long.
So yes, marketing is essential—but it doesn’t mean you have to become a marketing guru overnight.
Let’s make this simpler for you. Here’s how to approach marketing when you’re not a marketer (and don’t want to be).
✅ 1. Start Small—Pick Just One or Two Simple Tactics
You don’t need to do everything. In fact, trying to tackle every platform and strategy will only leave you frustrated and burned out. Instead, start with one or two strategies that work even if you’re short on time and budget.
Here are two of the easiest and most effective places to start:
• Google Business Profile
This is a must if you have a local business. It’s free and helps you show up on Google Maps and local searches—exactly where your nearby customers are looking. Add photos, your hours, and ask happy customers for reviews. That alone can bring in leads without spending a dime on ads.
• Basic Social Media Presence
Choose one platform (not five!) where your ideal customers spend time. Post once or twice a week to start. Share tips, photos, customer stories, or behind-the-scenes glimpses of your business. You don’t need to be perfect—just be real and consistent.
✅ 2. Set Aside Just 30 Minutes a Week for Marketing
Marketing doesn’t have to take over your schedule. Block out 30 minutes each week to focus on one small task—like writing a quick social post, asking a customer for a review, or updating your website.
Consistency beats intensity every time.
✅ 3. Use Tools That Make Your Life Easier
There are so many tools today that help non-marketers look like pros. A few worth checking out:
• Canva – for making great-looking graphics easily
• ChatGPT – for writing social posts, blogs, and emails in your tone of voice
• Google Business – free local exposure
• Email platforms like Brevo or MailChimp – to stay in touch with customers automatically
✅ 4. Repurpose What You Already Have
Did a customer send you a thank-you email? Turn that into a social post. Do you answer the same customer question over and over? Record a short video or write a blog post answering it.
You don’t need to constantly create from scratch—just reuse and reshape what you already have.
✅ 5. Ask for Help When You’re Ready
Eventually, you might want a coach, freelancer, or marketing partner to take things off your plate. That’s perfectly okay—and smart. But even if you outsource, it helps to understand the basics, so you can make better decisions and avoid wasting money.
🧡 Bottom Line: You Don’t Have to Be a Marketer—You Just Need a Simple System
Marketing doesn’t have to be overwhelming. It doesn’t have to eat up your day. And it doesn’t need to pull you away from what you love most about your business.
Start small. Be consistent. Use tools. And grow step by step.
Because the truth is: you can do this—even if you’re not a marketer.
